The Eighth Chinese Merchant and the Disappeared Seamen, authored by Professor Gregory B. Lee, narrates the story of his grandfather, Chan Chin Lee, a Chinese merchant in early 20th-century Britain, and reveals the concealed history of the forced repatriation of Chinese sailors after WWII. This bilingual book, written in Cantonese and English, interweaves personal recollections with official documents, highlighting the often-overlooked experiences of the Chinese diaspora in the UK.
The narrative of the book is divided into two distinct parts, in line with its bilingual nature, and features two sets of duotone colors – silver and black, and copper and black. The use of these metallic colors, combined with black, creates a sense of timelessness, evoking a feeling of both ancient and enduring qualities.
The cover of the book showcases a overlay of two different types of photographs – a portrait and a landscape postcard. This juxtaposition, achieved through an inverted arrangement, echoes the intertwined destinies of the sailors and the protagonist.
